Psyillum husk is a soluble fibre that is used as a mucilaginous natural laxative. It adds bulk to stools which can help prevent and relieve constipation and haemorrhoids, promoting digestion and bowel movements. It achieves this by attracting water to form a gelatinous mass, keeping faeces soft and promoting peristalsis.
As it is a soluble fibre it cannot be digested, so it is fermented by good bacteria which produce fatty acids important for nourishing the cells of the intestine.
Other benefits include:
- Potential to decrease appetite, therefore supporting weight loss.
- Helping maintain healthy cholesterol levels by binding to cholesterol which is expelled in the stool.
- Supporting blood sugar regulation, as decreases the need for insulin as slows down absorption of sugar into the blood stream.
- Can also be used in baking as a great binder for gluten free recipes.
Dose and directions
Start off slowly with 1-3 tsps in a glass of water. This can then be gradually increased to 1-3 tbsps.
Can initially cause bloating, but this will only be temporary as your gut adjusts to the new level of fibre.
Ensure plenty of liquid is consumed as the husk absorbs lots of water.
