Lemon Balm, Melissa officinalis, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Lamiaceae (mint) family, native to parts of Europe, north Africa, western Asia and the Middle East. It grows 70–150cm tall, bearing small white summer blossom and leaves with a mild lemon scent.
Traditionally used to improve mood and cognitive function, there is now preliminary research that suggests Lemon Balm can be used to reduce symptoms of anxiety. As well as calming nerves, there is also some promising research into the benefits the herb might offer to brain function.
