GOPO® Joint Health
GOPO® Joint Health is made from 100% specially cultivated natural rose-hip and is the only product of its kind to contain a high level of GOPO® – a key component of the rose-hip which may play a valuable role in the care of joints and joint tissues.
GOPO® was discovered over 30 years ago in Denmark and significant levels can only be obtained if the rose-hips are dried using a special patented process. GOPO® has been available in Denmark for over ten years and has been the subject of several scientific studies.
Content per capsule: 4 capsules provide: 3g scientifically documented rose-hip powder with 524ug of GOPO® (glyocide of mono and diglycerol) at date of production. Also provides 40mg Vitamin C .
What is GOPO®?
GOPO® (glycoside of mono and diglycerol) is the active compound isolated from the rose-hip Rosa Canina that has been clinically proven to help reduce joint pain and stiffness, improving flexibility and mobility.
Studies have shown that due to its anti-inflammatory properties, GOPO® is more effective at reducing pain and improving mobility than other supplements for joint pain, such as glucosamine.
Studies show that 82% of patients reported a reduction in pain after 3 weeks of active treatment with GOPO®1. Taking GOPO® can also decrease the need for pain-killers and anti-inflammatory drugs by 40-50%2, and unlike prescription drugs it has no known side-effects.
The history of GOPO®
In the early 1980’s, a Danish osteoarthritis sufferer, Erik ‘Farmer’ Hansen, dissatisfied with prescribed painkillers, was recommended to try a rose-hip marmalade.
Highly impressed with the painkilling effects, Hansen began small scale production and distribution of dried rose-hip powder – and letters of appreciation from thousands of satisfied customers began to arrive.
In 1995, Hansen’s son was able to deliver some 5000 letters of recommendation to Dr Kaj Winther, an inflammation specialist, who instigated clinical trials. In-vitro studies brought impressive results and clinical trials confirmed the high effectiveness of the preparation.

The Evidence for GOPO®
GOPO® has been extensively studied in scientifically robust clinical trials involving more than 400 patients with chronic joint conditions. The treatment has produced significant and consistent pain relief and improved joint function in patients with both osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
GOPO® reduces joint pain
A number of independently-conducted clinical trials have shown that GOPO® consistently reduces pain associated with chronic joint conditions. In one randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 94 patients with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee, 8 out of 10 patients reported a significant reduction in pain after just 3 weeks of GOPO® treatment.
In another randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 89 patients with rheumatoid arthritis: GOPO® significantly reduced the number of tender and swollen joints.
GOPO® reduces the need for painkillers
In one trial, pain associated with OA has also been alleviated to such an extent with GOPO® that the use of ‘rescue medication’ (e.g. paracetamol, opioids) significantly declined with GOPO® treatment.
GOPO® improves joint mobility and activity levels
Several clinical trials have confirmed that GOPO® improves joint mobility and reduces disability. In studies, GOPO®:
- significantly reduced morning stiffness and pain.
- significantly improved mood, sleep quality, energy and well-being.
- significantly improved hip joint mobility.
- significantly improved activities of daily living.
GOPO® may protect joint cartilage
Studies in the laboratory have demonstrated that GOPO® can switch off certain genes responsible for producing proteins and enzymes that have been implicated in inflammatory joint destruction and switch on genes that help to produce collagen and cartilage, which are essential components of a healthy joint. This suggests that GOPO® may protect cartilage cells and help to rebuild joint tissues.
GOPO® may be more effective than paracetamol and glucosamine
A meta-analysis of three large, randomized controlled trials conducted using GOPO® in 287 OA patients confirmed that GOPO® offers significant and robust joint pain relief, enabling a reduction in the consumption of painkillers.
A comparison of pain effect size scores in these studies with those published for paracetamol and glucosamine suggests that GOPO® may be more effective than paracetamol and glucosamine.
Is GOPO® in any other products?
No, the GOPO® compound is unique to the GOPO® Joint Health Range in the UK.
Are all rose-hip products the same?
No, rose-hip products differ in formulation and concentration of rose-hip powder and the rose-hip sub-species they are derived from.
